‘By the end of the 2024/2025 season, Andrea Leine and three dancers from the dance company LeineRoebana – Aika Goto, Elizabeth Steele, and myself, Mariví van den Hooff – revisited and analyzed one of the company’s performances from 2001, titled S/he. Elizabeth Steele and I were interns with the company for that season, and to finish off our internshiptrajectories, Andrea Leine chose for us to do this analyzation. She made this choice, for one, to give us the opportunity to really take the time to focus on our personal learning curves and to be able to progress even further within our process at LeineRoebana and as an artist.
At the same time, this study was part of a bigger research that the company is doing on their own work, in which they take a look at all the different phases of artistic ideas that they went through over the years, in order to create an overview of their oeuvre, vision and movement principles. So, with this study of S/he, we were involved in this bigger research and could also share our views on and thoughts about the work with Andrea Leine.’
‘In our study, we combined both physical and theoretical approaches: we engaged with the material by learning sections from the piece, we analyzed our personal processes within that and deepened our understanding of the work through accessing interviews and texts about the performance and the company. The main physical segment that we studied was a solo originally performed by Andrea Leine, one of the company’s artistic directors and choreographers, but also a dancer in many of their pieces. For this solo-study, we worked on a very thorough and detailed level. There was no rush on learning the material fast, the importance was to really catch the essence and precision of the solo and the movement and to process those within our own bodies. Secondly, we got the assignment to pick another part of the piece and learn as much as we could from that within 75 minutes. Important though was to do this with the analytical eye that we had developed during the solo-process. For this assignment, I picked a solo by Tim Persent, another dancer in S/he.’
